Momentum has always been a positive word in my vocabulary because (for the most part), I’m a person with a pretty positive outlook on life, but is it always positive for all people?
The answer, of course, is NO.
The thing is, momentum can take you in the direction of happiness, success and all things good, but it can do just as good a job of taking you in the direction of the opposite experiences in life such as frustration, anger, disappointment and sadness to name just a few.
So what determines where your momentum takes you (I hear you ask)?….
… And the answer I’ll offer up to you is…. Your habitual patterns of behaviour.
It’s not complicated to understand once you hear it, but having the answer to this question is very powerful because once you know this, you can make the necessary adjustments to change the direction of your momentum to something that supports what you want from life, rather than having it become the saboteur of your dreams.
“The saboteur of your dreams”… Sounds so poetic when you say it. Could be a line in a great song for sure, but you know what?… It’s not poetic, it’s not funny and I promise you, you don’t want it in your life.
So for the sake of progress, I’ll assume that we agree on my last statement and move ahead with discussing the why and how of what to do about this if it is a problem for you right now.
Let’s return to the subject of “habits’ and I’ll talk about how your habits affect pretty much everything you experience and communicate to yourself about what you experience.
You see, your habits are formed over time by repetition, and repetition eventually creates new programming and beliefs that in turn, reinforce the value of continuing with those habits.
You kind of get stuck in a negative loop that keeps going round and round, screwing with everything good that you’re trying to achieve.
So I would think by now the answer to this hellhole of negativity is obvious to you by now, but just in case… Here’s what you’ve gotta do….
… Change your habits for more supportive ones now!
OK?… Great!… Off you go and do that then LOL.
Listen, I don’t mean to make light of this, because it is a real issue for some people and perhaps it’s an issue for you too?
I’m serious though, you need to change those habits for more supportive ones, and I’m going to tell you how to do that right now… So buckle up :).
Ready?… Cool 🙂
Firstly, let’s discuss why most people don’t throw off the shackles of negative habit patterns and limiting beliefs… It’s because they don’t make the conscious effort to do it for long enough.
Yep, I said conscious effort.
You see, your beliefs about who you are, what you can achieve, what makes you happy, what makes you unhappy and so much more, they are part of your inner programming, the very essence of who you are, your default setting.
This is what you’ll revert to and rely on when things get tough or you are feeling stressed and it’s also what determines how you think and act which in turn, determines your results and experience of life.
Thing is if your current beliefs and habits are not leading you to where you want to go then you need to consciously make some changes over a period of time and commit to continuing with this until your conscious effort becomes your subconscious programming or new default setting if you like?
It amazes me though, how many people seem to expect to change habits of a lifetime in the time it takes to flick a switch. Sure you can get all pumped up, motivated and excited for a while, but will it last?…
… Unlikely…. Why?… Because you are expending conscious effort to maintain this and it takes it out of you… In short, it’s bloody hard work and that’s why so many people fall flat on their face when it comes to making a lasting change.
Here’s the rub…
… You need to commit to a programme of positive affirmations and reframing over a period of 30 to 90 days depending on how deeply engrained your beliefs and habits are.
Here are some things you can do:
Watch your thoughts and learn to recognise negative thoughts.
Watch your words and correct when you speak so you are aligned with the new version of you that you want to be.
Every time you think a negative thought, repeat a positive affirmation over it.
Every time you say something negative, correct yourself aloud, disassociate yourself from the negative and attach yourself to the positive statement that you corrected it with.
Keep your focus on what you want and off what you don’t want… Focus is key.
These are just a few simple things that you can start to do in order to get momentum going your way and have life give you whatever you ask of it.
It’s going to take some conscious effort but it’s worth it.
If you commit right now to following up with the suggestions I’ve shared with you, it will change your beliefs, the thoughts and actions that accompany those belief and as a result, it will change you the person and it will change your life!
You owe it to yourself…
Go get em!
